Milan (AP) — Germany's federal prosecutor says authorities are still trying to determine whether the man who carried out the deadly truck attack in Berlin had a network of supporters. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility. Suspect Anis Amri was shot dead by an Italian police officer overnight after he was asked to show identification outside a train station in Milan. Authorities say Amri pulled out a gun and shot and wounded one officer. Another officer shot him dead.
BERLIN (AP) — Police in Germany are holding two brothers from Kosovo who are accused of plotting to carry out an attack on a shopping mall in western Germany. Authorities say the men were taken into custody in Duisburg (DOOS'-boorg) shortly after midnight local time. Authorities believe the attack was planned for a mall in nearby Oberhausen, and police presence has been stepped up at the shopping center and a local Christmas market.
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Police in Australia say they may have stopped several attacks planned for Christmas Day in Melbourne. Officials are holding five men suspected of planning bomb attacks at three locations in Australia's second-largest city. Officials say the suspects were inspired by the Islamic State group and had been planning the attacks for three weeks. A total of seven people were arrested in overnight raids, but two of them were released without being charged.
VALLETTA, Malta (AP) — The prime minister of Malta says 65 passengers have left a hijacked Libyan plane that landed in Malta. The airline had said there were 118 people on board, including 111 passengers. An airline official said the two hijackers expressed a willingness to release the passengers but keep the pilot. Maltese state television reported that the hijackers had hand grenades and had threatened to explode them.
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) — Some 80 people have been evacuated from a central Florida hotel that's caught fire. Aerial video shows flames burning through the roof in one corner of the two-story Unno Boutique Hotel in Kissimmee. Osceola County Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Danny McAvoy tells an Orlando TV station (WESH) that the fire started in an area of the hotel that wasn't occupied, and he says the building had been under construction.
