BEIRUT (AP) — Buses are standing by in eastern Aleppo to evacuate the wounded and sick from the Syrian city. The evacuation is part of an agreement between rebels and the Syrian government in what is effectively Aleppo's surrender to the government. The rebels have held on to the eastern part of Aleppo for four years but their enclave rapidly evaporated in the past days in the face of a fierce Syrian government onslaught.
NAGATO, Japan (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in Japan for a two-day summit that marks his first official visit to a G-7 country since Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea. During two days of talks Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (shin-zoh ah-bay) hopes to make progress on a long-running territorial dispute, while trying to bolster ties with economic projects. A major breakthrough is seen as unlikely.
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A possible South Korean presidential contender says the country should reconsider its plans to deploy an advanced U.S. missile defense system in response to North Korean threats. Opposition politician Moon Jae-in says the security benefits of having Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, would be curtailed by worsened relations with neighbors China and Russia. Recent opinion polls show Moon as a presidential favorite.
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — A preliminary hearing is scheduled for today in Tennessee for the 24-year-old driver of a school bus that crashed last month, killing six children. Johnthony Walker is charged with five counts of vehicular homicide, reckless driving and reckless endangerment. Today's hearing will determine whether Walker's case will head to a grand jury.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The first retail marijuana store in Anchorage, Alaska is set to open today, and the line of customers could be long. Shuttle buses are expected to ferry some customers. But by law, only eight people are allowed inside the shop at any given time. Arctic Herbery is Anchorage's first legal marijuana retail store, but others have opened in other cities in the state.
