BEIRUT (AP) — The United Nations is demanding immediate access to eastern Aleppo, which Syria's U.N. ambassador says has been liberated from rebels. The diplomat -- Bashar Ja'afari -- appearing before the U.N. Security Council, rejected allegations that Syria's military has carried out revenge attacks and executions of civilians in the former rebel stronghold. The U.S., Britain and France say there have been atrocities.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has nominated an international oil executive with no government experience to become secretary of state. Senate confirmation of Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson may prove a challenge. Tillerson has extensive ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin because of Exxon's oil dealings there. Trump is also said to have decided on another Texan, former Gov. Rick Perry, to head the Energy Department. That's the same agency Perry couldn't remember during a debate when he spoke of eliminating federal agencies.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A couple hundred climate scientists, researchers, activists and supporters have rallied in San Francisco to defend climate-change research. They held signs with slogans such as "Stand up for Science." They object to President-elect Donald Trump's questioning of scientific conclusions that mankind's use of oil and natural gas is rapidly warming the earth's atmosphere. Meanwhile, the Energy Department says it won't hand over the names of staffers who worked on climate policy or other issues to President-elect Donald Trump's transition team. Some staffers fear a purge.
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The prosecution is attempting to show that Dylann Roof was highly methodical in the planning of the shooting that left nine people dead at a church in Charleston, South Carolina, last year. An FBI agent testified that Roof used back roads to escape and confessed to saving ammunition after the slaughter in case he was confronted by police and needed to commit suicide. Jurors were also shown videos of Roof practicing rapid-fire shooting and reloading.
