WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Goldman Sachs President Gary Cohn to a top White House economic post. Cohn will serve as director of the National Economic Council, which doesn't require Senate confirmation. Trump was critical of Goldman Sachs during the presidential campaign and blasted Hillary Clinton for giving paid speeches to the Wall Street giant. But he's now chosen three people with ties to the bank for his administration. The others are Steven Mnuchin (mih-NOO'-chin), the Treasury secretary nominee, and Steve Bannon, Trump's chief strategist and senior counselor.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is shooting down the notion floated by one of Donald Trump's potential State Department picks that the Obama administration may have framed Russia with false hacking allegations. Over the weekend former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton left open the possibility that cyber interference in the election might have been done by the Obama administration. White House spokesman Josh Earnest says he can rule out that possibility. He says the theory has been floated by a "wide range of irresponsible conspiracy theorists."

WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin judge has ordered separate trials for two girls accused of trying to kill a classmate to please a fictional horror character called Slender Man. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Waukesha (WAW'-kih-shaw) County Circuit Judge Michael Bohren ordered separate trials for 14-year-old Morgan Geyser and 15-year-old Anissa Weier after defense teams and prosecutors agreed that a joint trial could pose legal risks. The girls were 12 when prosecutors say they stabbed a classmate 19 times. They have pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease to attempted homicide charges in adult court.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans district attorney says he'll seek a 60-year sentence for the man who shot former Saints star Will Smith. That's the maximum 40 years for manslaughter in Smith's death, with 20 years added for attempted manslaughter in the wounding of Smith's wife. Jurors found Cardell Hayes guilty of the lesser charges last night, deciding against murder in the April shootings. Sentencing is set for Feb. 17.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A funeral has been held for football player Joe McKnight, who was shot and killed during a road-rage incident Dec. 1. Six former New York Jets teammates were pallbearers at today's funeral in New Orleans. McKnight played for the Jets from 2010 to 2013.
