WASHINGTON (AP) — Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is putting an end to his ill-fated bid to become secretary of state. Today, the staunch surrogate for Donald Trump formally withdrew his name from consideration for any post in the president-elect's administration. Trump is now seriously considering Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson for the post. Mitt Romney, the 2012 GOP presidential candidate, is also still in the mix.
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan Supreme Court is turning down an appeal by Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein to restart a vote recount in the state. A federal judge ended the recount two days ago. At the same time, a federal judge in Pennsylvania says he'll rule Monday on a Green Party-backed bid seeking a recount of paper ballots. Meanwhile, Wisconsin election officials report that nearly 89 percent of the ballots there have been counted.
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — In a video confession shown today during his death penalty trial, Dylann Roof outlined why he fatally shot the pastor and eight black worshippers at a Charleston, South Carolina, church in 2015. He said he wanted the world to know he hated black people and thought they were criminals. He said he thought about attacking drug dealers, but they might shoot back. So, he told the FBI, he picked the church after learning about it online.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — A Reno, Nevada, high school student remains in critical condition after he was shot by a campus police officer in the chest, but is stable and showing signs of improvement. His lawyer says the emotionally distressed 14-year-old, who was armed with a knife, had been bullied and beaten and was trying to escape from a crowd of classmates who had gathered Wednesday to capture video of an anticipated fight when he was shot.
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — People are mourning the death of former University of Colorado player and 1994 Heisman Trophy winner Rashaan Salaam. Hundreds of former teammates, family and friends gathered today for his funeral at the Islamic Center of Boulder, Colorado. Salaam was found dead Monday night in a park not far from the college. He was 42. His mother tells USA TODAY Sports that police suspect he killed himself.
