CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The brother of an unarmed black motorist shot by a white police officer says he could eventually "find the peace" to forgive former patrolman Michael Slager. Anthony Scott's statement came after a judge in Charleston, South Carolina, today declared a mistrial after the jury deadlocked. Anthony Scott said he couldn't forgive Slager until after justice is done in the death of his brother, Walter Scott, in April 2015.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Vice President Al Gore today joined the throngs of mostly private citizens visiting President-elect Donald Trump in New York as he continues working on setting up his administration. Gore didn't say specifically what he and Trump talked about when he visited with reporters afterward. But the Democrat called the session "productive" and said the talks were a "sincere search for common ground." Trump and Gore have widely divergent views on global warming. A1223.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Prosecutors in northern California say murder charges may be brought in connection with the devastating Oakland warehouse fire that killed at least three-dozen people. Alameda County Sheriff Gregory Ahern told The Associated Press today he didn't believe there would be additional bodies found from the weekend fire in a cluttered warehouse that had been converted to artists' studios and illegal living spaces. The fire broke out during an underground dance party at a building known as the "Ghost Ship."

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A tragic accident has been reported in San Antonio, Texas, where officials say an off-duty sheriff's deputy died and two other people were hurt when two vehicles plunged into a water-filled sinkhole. he Bexar (bayr) County Sheriff's Office identified the victim as 69-year-old Deputy Dora Linda Nishihara (nee-shee-HAR'-uh), who was a courthouse bailiff. A crane was used to retrieve her personal car from water about 12-feet deep. Nishihara's body was inside the vehicle.

SECAUCUS, N .J. (AP) —Feel like this could have been you? Transit officials in New Jersey are reporting tonight that a passenger pulled the emergency stop on a train so he could retrieve the cellphone he dropped on the tracks. Authorities say Eric Jones, of Harlem in New York City, was riding on a North Jersey Coast Line train when he accidentally dropped his phone onto the tracks while he was between cars. The train was stopped around 8:20 this morning near the Secaucus Junction. The stoppage caused travel delays of up to 15 minutes on several lines during the morning commute.
