SANTIAGO, Cuba (AP) — Fidel Castro's ashes have arrived at a Santiago, Cuba cemetery to mark the start of funeral ceremonies. The crowds lining the road into the cemetery for Fidel Castro's funeral are singing Cuba's National Anthem and shouting "Viva Fidel!" A 21-gun salute was sounded. The caravan entered the cemetery, but the road has been crowded and access for the press has been blocked.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A converted Oakland, California warehouse known as the "Ghost Ship" turned into a death trap as a fire ripped through a late-night dance party, killing at least nine people and probably more. Officials say more bodies can be seen in the rubble and around two dozen people are missing. The warehouse was an artist workspace and illegal home for a rotating cast of a dozen or more residents.
MOSUL, Iraq (AP) — Heavy fighting flared up in the eastern sector of Mosul today, with both sides exchanging heavy gunfire from rooftops in the Shaimaa neighborhood. Meanwhile, the Iraqi government has dispatched truckloads of food, heating oil and drinking water to residents of areas retaken from the Islamic State group in and around the northern city. More civilians are streaming out of the city amid the intense fighting.
ALEPPO, Syria (AP) — A spokesman for Syria's army says rebel fighters who choose to stay in Aleppo will face "inevitable death." The army says it is offering rebel fighters an opportunity to leave the city with their lives. Government forces and allied militias are seeking to collapse an opposition pocket on the city's eastern side. The spokesman says the Syrian army has retaken more than 50 percent of neighborhoods in eastern Aleppo.
HELSINKI (AP) — Police in Finland says a man has been detained after three women were shot to death in an apparent random shooting in a nightlife district in a small town in the country's southeast. The victims were gunned down in a pedestrian area outside a restaurant late yesterday in the town of Imatra just before a police patrol car arrived at the scene. There is no known motive so far.
