IVA, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a 31-year-old South Carolina man was shot to death after running from a car and getting into a fight with a sheriff's deputy.

Anderson County Sheriff's Lt. Shelia Cole said the man was a passenger in a car the deputy was trying to pull over Tuesday afternoon near Iva.

Cole says one shot was fired, but investigators don't know if it came from the deputy's weapon. She did not indicate whether more than one gun was at the scene.

Cole says the deputy suffered a cut to the head and went to the hospital but the injury shouldn't be life-threatening.

Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore identified the man as Alexander Partain and says an autopsy will be performed Wednesday. Cole says the driver is in custody. Authorities did not release the deputy's name.
