BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand's Queen Sirikit, widow of recently deceased King Bhumibol Adulyadej, has recovered from a fever and lung infection and has left a hospital and returned to Chitralada Palace in the Thai capital, a royal statement said Tuesday.
Sirikit, 84, had been staying at Siriraj Hospital along with the king until his death at age 88 on Oct. 13. She was admitted to Chulalongkorn Hospital on Nov. 16. Tuesday's statement from the Royal Household Bureau said her infection was almost gone, she was able to eat and walk well, and no longer had a fever.
Her hospital discharge came the same day that her son, 64-year-old Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, was confirmed by the Cabinet and legislature to become the next king, a process expected to be completed in a day or two when he formally accepts the throne. His father Bhumibol had been on the throne since 1946, and his passing has been marked by a massive outpouring of grief and an extended period of mourning.
