LIMA, Peru (AP) — President Barack Obama planned separate talks with the leaders of Australia and Canada before wrapping up the final foreign trip of his presidency. Both countries helped negotiate a multinational trade agreement with the U.S. and nine other Pacific Rim countries. But Congress is unlikely to ratify the deal and President-elect Donald Trump says trade deals can hurt U.S. workers.

BEDMINSTER, N.J. (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump is waiting for his latest round of guests as he mulls appointments to his administration. The schedule today includes New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach. Setting a rancorous year aside, Trump put on a smiling show of goodwill yesterday with former rival Mitt Romney.

LUCKNOW, India (AP) — The death toll is climbing in northern India today where 14 cars of a passenger train derailed today. Officials now say at least 96 people are dead and more than 200 injured. Officials are using cutting tools to pry people from the wreckage. Police were having a hard time keeping away hundreds of people from nearby villages who were the first to reach the accident site.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A revelation from South Korean prosecutors today may convince opposition parties to push for President Park Geun-hye'a (goon-hayz) impeachment. Prosecutors say they believe she conspired in criminal activities of confidante Choi Soon-sil who allegedly exploited her presidential ties to amass an illicit fortune. Prosecutors have filed formal charges against Choi.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — An official in Kenya says four suspected extremists have been killed near the Somali border in a gunbattle with police. They region has been hard-hit by recent attacks by the Somali extremist group al-Shabab. The official says the group allegedly was planning an attack on a police station. He says police recovered four rifles and Somali army military jackets.
