DENVER (AP) — Forecasters have scaled back their prediction on how much snow will fall in the Rocky Mountains from the first big storm of the season. The National Weather Service says it expects 8 inches or more in the higher elevations. Earlier, it predicted 10 inches or more. Autumn snow has been scarce in the Rockies, forcing some ski areas to push back opening day and causing some nervousness about how much water will be available next spring for the Colorado River.

DENVER (AP) — An attorney for a blogger convicted of illegal use of an ATV for taking part in a ride through a federally protected canyon in Utah told a federal appeals court Thursday that his client deserves a new trial. Attorney Michelle Mumford says the trial of Monte Wells was tainted because the judge was friends with a conservation group lawyer. Wells took part in a ride in 2014 through parts of Recapture Canyon closed to motor vehicles because of ruins that are nearly 2,000 years old.

WEST JORDAN, Utah (AP) — The court case for a 14-year-old Utah boy accused of shooting another teen twice in the head outside a middle school will remain open to the public and media after attorneys reached an agreement Thursday. The teen is facing attempted murder and weapons charges in the Oct. 25 incident outside the school in Sandy. The 16-year-old victim survived.

OREM, Utah (AP) — A Utah high school coach who helped corner a student suspected in a locker-room stabbing that wounded five classmates says he tried to calm the boy and halt the attack. Jordan Blanchard told KUTV Wednesday that he was in the hallway at Mountain View Elementary when a student ran up to him covered in blood.
