Clinton wrapped up Friday campaigning at a packed, star-studded concert in Cleveland featuring singer Beyonce and her husband, rapper Jay Z. Donald Trump, meanwhile, defended his go-it-alone approach and bragged that he didn't need stars to draw thousands to his events.
NEW YORK (AP) — Authorities say a man with a history of arrests shot and killed a New York City police officer and wounded another before being killed. The dead officer is identified as Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo, a 19-year veteran. Police say the man forced his way into an apartment where his estranged wife and son were staying and later fled. He was spotted and police converged on the scene and the man opened fire on officers.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Defense Department says U.S. forces have taken out a top al-Qaida leader in an airstrike and is trying to determine whether another attack killed a second target. Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook has issued a written statement saying a precision strike conducted by the U.S. military on Oct. 23 killed Faruq al-Qatani, a senior plotter of attacks against the United States.
SEATTLE (AP) — State health officials confirm that eight of nine children hospitalized in Washington state for a polio-like illness have a rare syndrome that causes varying degrees of limb weakness. The eight cases from five counties in the state were determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to be acute flaccid myelitis, also known as AFM. The exact cause of AFM isn't known.
BEIJING (AP) — China has announced a new anti-pollution plan that aims to cap coal consumption and boost the use of non-fossil fuel. The cabinet's new climate plan envisions an 18-percent cut in carbon emissions by 2020 compared to 2015 levels. In recent years, China has become a world leader in renewable energy investment.
