WASHINGTON (AP) — Polling places are starting to open for early voting in the battleground state of Florida. Fifty counties will open polling places today, including the state's largest counties of Broward, Duval, Hillsborough, Miami-Dade, Orange and Palm Beach. The remaining counties will start in the coming week. Polls have shown a tight race in Florida between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — President Barack Obama is stepping up the pace of his campaign to make Hillary Clinton his successor, and he's also pushing for Democrats to retake the Senate. Obama will headline party fundraisers today in California. Last night he campaigned in Las Vegas for Clinton and Nevada's Senate candidate Catherine Cortez Masto.
SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) — Famed 1960s anti-war activist and former California legislator Tom Hayden has died at age 76. Hayden's wife says he died yesterday in Santa Monica following a long illness. He made headlines in the 1960s as a defendant in the Chicago 7 trial. Tom Hayden had also once been married to actress Jane Fonda. He served as a California lawmaker for nearly two decades.
TRION, Ga. (AP) — A fire in a mobile home in northwest Georgia has killed six people, including four children. The state fire marshal's office says the fire broke out last night in Trion. Authorities say the adults killed in the fire were husband and wife, but they're not sure if the four children belong to the couple.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Smithsonian officials are "over the rainbow" after reaching their fundraising goal to help preserve a pair of ruby slippers from "The Wizard Oz." The Smithsonian launched a Kickstarter campaign last week to raise $300,000 to help preserve the slippers that whisked Dorothy back to Kansas at the end of the movie. Officials say they reached their goal late last night thanks to more than 5,300 supporters in 41 countries.
