BAGHDAD (AP) — A hospital south of the Iraqi city of Mosul has treated some 250 people for breathing difficulties linked to a sulfur plant that was torched by the Islamic State group. A medical assistant says most of the patients were under 18 or elderly. Iraqi forces are waging a major offensive aimed at retaking Mosul from the Islamic State group, which captured Iraq's second-largest city in the summer of 2014.
BAGHDAD (AP) — Russia's Defense Ministry says an airstrike in Iraq by the U.S.-led coalition has left dozens of civilians dead. A ministry spokesman says two jets struck a funeral procession yesterday in a town near Kirkuk. The mayor of the town says 17 people were killed, mainly women and children, and another 50 wounded, but it's not clear who carried out the airstrike. The U.S. military in Baghdad couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Nearly 10,000 California National Guard soldiers have been ordered to repay huge enlistment bonuses a decade after signing up to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Los Angeles Times reports the Pentagon demanded the money back after audits revealed overpayments by the California Guard. Faced with a shortage of troops at the height of the two wars, California Guard officials offered bonuses of $15,000 or more. Soldiers say they feel betrayed at having to repay the money.
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A toddler has died in a house fire in Spokane (spoh-KAN'), Washington. He was found with his dog and teddy bear next to him, and authorities believe the dog died trying to protect the boy. A fire department spokesman says three other children and an adult escaped from the blaze that broke out last night in a house where the battery had been removed from the smoke detector.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia house where Oscar-winning actress Grace Kelly grew up and accepted a marriage proposal from Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1955 is now in the hands of the royal family. Her son, Prince Albert of Monaco, has confirmed to People Magazine that he was the recent buyer of the six-bedroom, 2.5-story Colonial home in the city's East Falls section. The prince said he plans to visit the city Tuesday as he considers plans for the home.
