Mercury News Publisher George Riggs has been named president and CEO of the California Newspapers Partnership, a three-company group controlled by MediaNews that publishes 33 daily and 56 non-daily California newspapers.

Riggs, 60, will continue as Mercury News publisher and will report to CNP Chairman Dean Singleton. Singleton is also chief executive and vice chairman of MediaNews, the Denver-based company that recently bought the Mercury News, Contra Costa Times, Monterey County Herald and St. Paul Pioneer Press from McClatchy.

The CNP was formed in 1999 when MediaNews, Stephens Media and Gannett contributed most of their California newspapers to the partnership, in which MediaNews has the controlling interest.

MediaNews' Bay Area newspapers are published by the partnership. These include the Mercury News, Contra Costa Times, Oakland Tribune, Hayward Daily Review, Tri-Valley Herald, Fremont Argus, San Mateo Times and Marin Independent Journal.
