SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Samsung Electronics is discontinuing production of Galaxy Note 7 smartphones permanently. Samsung had started shipping new Note 7s following reports that the original ones had batteries that caught fire. But even the replacements were having problems. Samsung says in a regulatory filing that it's decided to stop making the phone for the sake of consumer safety.
LUMBERTON, N.C. (AP) — Rescuers in North Carolina still have not made it to all the submerged cars following Hurricane Matthew. And Emergency Management Director Stephanie Chavis says they could find more bodies. Rescue teams have been ferrying people trapped by high water and there could be more flooding in communities downstream. In Lumberton, electricity is still cut off and there's virtually no gasoline, water or food for sale.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump says House Speaker Paul Ryan is hurting his campaign. Trump sent out a tweet today saying that despite "winning the second debate in a landslide (every poll), it is hard to do well when Paul Ryan and others give zero support!" The tweet comes a day after Ryan said he would not give Trump any support and would focus on keeping the GOP in control of the House.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) —Hillary Clinton is pledging more tax relief for families with young children. The Democratic presidential nominee announced a plan today to double the Child Tax Credit and to increase the amount that low-income families could get back in refunds. Clinton says she's trying to help families struggling with the cost of child care, health care and college.
PARIS (AP) — France is opening its first safe-injection room for drug addicts despite years of efforts by conservatives to block the plan. The room in northern Paris is opening for a six-year test period as allowed by a health law passed last year by the Socialist government. Intravenous drug users will be given access to clean needles under medical supervision and in the presence of drug counselors.
