ST. LOUIS (AP) — Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump refused to shake hands as they entered the debate hall in St. Louis. That's a break from traditional debate decorum. The town hall-style event is tense. Clinton says of a 2005 recording of Trump making predatory comments about women: 'It represents exactly who he is.' Trump countered saying there has 'never been anybody in the history of politics that's been so abusive to women' as Bill Clinton."

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Flooding is still a danger in eastern North Carolina. The region received record rains from Hurricane Matthew. The National Hurricane Center says Matthew's winds are diminishing along the coast but that water levels will remain elevated. Gov. Pat McCrory says dangerous flooding will last into next week. Eight people are confirmed dead in North Carolina as a result of the storm.

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) — Court records show the man suspected of fatally shooting two police officers and wounding another in Palm Springs, California, is a gang member who was previously sentenced to four years in prison in a failed murder plot. Twenty-six-year-old John Felix was charged with attempted murder in a 2009 shooting. Records show Felix pleaded down to assault with a firearm and admitted his gang connection. Felix has been arrested.

WILLISTON, Vt. (AP) — A vigil is being planned for five high school students killed in an automobile crash caused by a wrong-way driver in Williston, Vermont. It will be held at Harwood Union High School in Moretown at 6 p.m. on Monday. The teenagers were all riding in one car when a man driving the wrong way on an interstate highway crashed into them.

CAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — Gasoline prices are continuing to climb. According to the Lundberg Survey, the average price of gasoline in the U.S. has risen four cents over the past two weeks. It's now $2.29 a gallon for regular grade. Prices are up 13 cents over nine weeks. Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg says retailers and refiners have increased their prices in response to a rise in the cost of crude.
