WASHINGTON (AP) — Melania Trump is coming to her husband's defense, saying the vile words he spoke in an uncovered video do "not represent the man" she knows. Mrs. Trump says in a rare public statement that the words her husband used in the 2005 footage are — quote — "unacceptable and offensive to me." Donald Trump is meeting with advisers in New York.
UNDATED (AP) — Ten deaths in the U.S. are being blamed on Hurricane Matthew: Three in North Carolina, three in Georgia and four in Florida. Those numbers pale in comparison to Haiti, which counted 470 dead in one district alone when Matthew swept through the Caribbean island as a Category 4 storm. It has since weakened to a Category 1.
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — No injuries are reported after a brief hostage situation at a McDonald's restaurant outside Tampa, Florida. Authorities are searching for two men who crashed a stolen car at the restaurant and then held employees captive. A third man surrendered.
BERLIN (AP) — German authorities have destroyed several hundred grams of "highly volatile" explosives found in an apartment during a raid. Police are seeking a Syrian man suspected of planning a bombing attack. The suspect remains on the run but three contacts were detained.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Thousands gathered in the shadow of the massive USS John P. Murtha today to send the ship into active service and honor its namesake. The U.S. Navy commissioned the ship named for the late longtime congressman and decorated Marine Corps veteran from Western Pennsylvania during a ceremony at Penn's Landing in Philadelphia.
