NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are edging lower in afternoon trading as the market heads for its first weekly decline in four weeks. Nine of the 11 sectors of the Standard & Poor's 500 were lower, led by basic materials companies. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 57 points, or 0.3 percent, to 18,213 as of 1:27 p.m. Eastern time. The S&P 500 fell 9 points, or 0.4 percent, to 2,151. The Nasdaq composite fell 27 points, or 0.5 percent, to 5,278.
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. employers added 156,000 jobs last month, a decent gain but slightly below market expectations. Jobs growth has averaged 178,000 a month so far this year, down from last year's pace of 229,000. The figures may keep the Federal Reserve on track to raise the short-term interest rate it controls by December.
LONDON (AP) — The British pound fell 6 percent in what's being dubbed a "flash crash" to its lowest level in more than three decades, then rebounded. The currency was trading at $1.24, down from $1.26 on Thursday.
NEW YORK (AP) — Hurricane Matthew continues to cause problems for travelers, with 4,500 flights canceled so far between Wednesday and Saturday, according to tracking service FlightAware. All flights to and from Orlando were canceled today and half scrapped Saturday. FlightAware expects that number to rise.
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — ABC anchor Diane Sawyer, correspondent Jim Avila and the network are asking a South Dakota judge to dismiss a $1.2 billion defamation lawsuit. At issue are the network's reports on a meat producer's lean, finely textured beef product, which critics dubbed "pink slime." Beef Products Inc. says ABC misled consumers into believing that the product was unsafe. The journalists say the work was done in the public's interest.
