MIAMI (AP) — Forecasters say the first outer rain bands from Hurricane Matthew already have begun to approach Florida as the big storm crosses the Bahamas toward the state. It's still a Category 3 hurricane, packing top sustained winds of 125 miles an hour. Matthew is expected to become an even more powerful Category 4 storm in coming hours as it approaches Florida's east coast starting tonight. In the Bahamas, officials say the capital Nassau has begun to feel the full brunt of the storm.
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — City officials in Charleston, South Carolina, which weathered Category 4 Hurricane Hugo almost 30 years ago, say the city has run out of sandbags after distributing more than for any other storm. The city has distributed more than 15,000 sandbags as residents prepare for Hurricane Matthew. There were long lines of motorists waiting to get sandbags at one distribution point on the city's north side late yesterday.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Mike Pence says both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have "many admirable qualities young people can look up to." The Republican vice presidential candidate's unexpected praise for the Democratic nominee came on NBC's "Today" show when he was asked whether he thinks his running mate is a role model for children. The question has become a tricky one for Republicans. Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte (AY'-aht) made news this week by initially answering yes, but then changing her answer to no. Pence said Trump is an example of a "strong leader" and Clinton should be recognized for becoming the first female nominee from a major party.
