KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Hurricane Matthew is posing a real threat to Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba. It's one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes in recent history. Matthew is a Category 4 storm with winds of up to 150 mph. it's expected to be near eastern Jamaica and southwestern Haiti on Monday. People in those countries are battening down the hatches ahead of heavy rains and wind.
MORGAN HILL, Calif. (AP) — A wildfire is continuing to burn in Northern California's Santa Cruz Mountains. It's destroyed a dozen homes and 16 other structures. The blaze has charred about 6½ square miles and is 56 percent contained. It still threatens 325 structures. Many people were forced to flee their homes. Fire officials expect full containment by early next week.
HOBOKEN, N.J. (AP) — Federal investigators say there were no problems with signals at a New Jersey station where a commuter train crashed on Thursday, killing a woman and injuring more than 100 others. The National Transportation Safety Board says signals leading to the terminal appear to be working normally. The NTSB says the train's engineer has also been interviewed.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The parents of a 6-year-old boy who died several days after being wounded in a school shooting in South Carolina say the boy showed his family how to love, laugh and smile. Jacob Hall died today. Authorities say he was critically injured when a 14-year-old boy opened fire on a school playground in Townville. Another student and a first-grade teacher were also shot. The alleged shooter is in jail.
EL CAJON, Calif. (AP) — The father of a unarmed black man who was shot by police is demanding the police chief's resignation. He made the demand at a rally Saturday in El Cajon, California, to protest the shooting. Richard Olango Abuka said his son's death is a turning point in a peaceful struggle to change police practices. The event comes a day after police released two videos of the shooting.
