JERUSALEM (AP) — Former Israeli President and Prime Minister Shimon Peres (shee-MOHN' PEHR'-ehs) has died. Peres suffered a stroke two weeks ago. The Nobel prize winner helped guide Israel through some of its most defining moments including peace talks with the Palestinians in the 1990s. At the White House, President Barack Obama praised Peres for having an "unshakeable moral foundation and unflagging optimism." Peres was 93.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Hillary Clinton is picking up another Republican endorsement, this time from former Virginia Senator John Warner. He's set to appear Wednesday morning with Democratic vice presidential nominee — and current Virginia senator — Tim Kaine in Arlington. Warner served five terms in the Senate and has strong national security credentials. He is a former Navy secretary and Senate Armed Service Committee chairman.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Despite concerns from China, a top American diplomat says the U.S. intends to deploy a missile defense system in South Korea "as soon as possible." The plans were shared at a congressional hearing on Tuesday by Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Russel. North Korea has conducted two nuclear test explosions this year, including one earlier this month.
BEIJING (AP) — According to Chinese state media reports, a coal mine blast that killed 19 people on Tuesday is being blamed on a gas explosion. The accident happened at a small mine where 20 miners were working underground in the northwestern region Ningxia (neen-SHAH'). Officials reportedly consider the operation to be illegal.
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho election workers say it's no longer enough to encourage people to get out to the polls. Instead, they say, it's time to bring the polls to the people. In the state's most populous Ada County, officials have designed food truck-inspired voting stations to entice voters to cast ballots early for the general election.
