CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — A bomb squad in Charlotte, North Carolina, is investigating a suspicious package found near police headquarters. Officers have blocked off streets as a precaution. The discovery comes after a week of protests over the fatal police shooting of a black man. Police have said Keith Scott was armed with a handgun and officers told him repeatedly to drop the weapon before he was shot to death. Scott's family says he wasn't armed.
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Police in Little Rock, Arkansas, have dropped a charge against an Arkansas lawmaker who was arrested when officers said he refused to leave a traffic stop he was recording. Police also issued a letter of apology to Rep. John Walker, who was charged with misdemeanor obstructing governmental operations. Walker is the co-sponsor of a law partly aimed at preventing authorities from prohibiting the filming of an arrest.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A top State Department official has told lawmakers that the U.S. intends to deploy a missile defense system in South Korea "as soon as possible." That's according to Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Russel. North Korea has conducted two nuclear test explosions this year, and the latest one, on Sept. 9, was its largest to date.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican senators have questioned FBI Director James Comey (KOH'-mee) about whether anything more could have been done to prevent recent acts of extremist violence, including the Manhattan bombing this month. Comey said the FBI admits mistakes when it makes them, but he did not agree that anything should have been done differently or that any red flags were missed.
MIAMI (AP) — Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was a patron at a Miami River bar and restaurant the same night he and two friends were killed in a boat crash. A friend of one of the victims said he warned Fernandez against the post-midnight trip. Marlins center fielder Marcell Ozuna said he and at least two other teammates turned down invitations to go and tried to discourage Fernandez from going out.
