MIAMI (AP) — One of the top pitchers in baseball has died in a boating accident. The Coast Guard says Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez was one of three people killed in a boat crash off Miami Beach early today. In a statement, the Marlins say they are "devastated by the tragic loss." Today's home game against the Atlanta Braves has been canceled.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Police are taking special security precautions in anticipation of protests around today's NFL game in Charlotte, North Carolina. The city has declared the game between the Carolina Panthers and Minnesota Vikings an extraordinary event. That allows them to ban backpacks and regular items that can be used as weapons, such as chains and box cutters. It also allows police more latitude to stop and search people within several blocks of Bank of America Stadium. The action comes amid daily protests over Keith Scott's fatal shooting by police on Tuesday.

BURLINGTON, Wash. (AP) — A Turkish immigrant has been arrested in connection with Friday's shootings at a mall in Burlington, Washington, that left five people dead. Authorities say the 20-year-old man said nothing and appeared "zombie-like" when he was captured nearly 24 hours into an intense manhunt. Arcan Cetin (CHAY'-tihn) is expected to appear in court tomorrow.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Authorities say five people have been shot, one of them fatally, in two separate shootings within minutes of each other in the eastern Illinois city of Champaign. Police say they believe the two shootings may be related. They say the first apparently stemmed from an argument at an apartment party shortly after midnight. It escalated into a fight outside in which shots were fired, striking four people.

NEW YORK (AP) — About 100 runners are competing in a New York City race after a pipe bombing canceled their race in New Jersey last week. They're among 25,000 runners scheduled to participate in today's Tunnel to Towers Run. The race traces the route of a firefighter who ran from Brooklyn to the World Trade Center on 9/11. Proceeds go to wounded veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The New Jersey race was canceled after a pipe bomb exploded on the course Sept. 17.
