SEASIDE PARK, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a pipe bomb has exploded in a Jersey Shore town shortly before thousands of runners were due to take part in a charity 5K race to benefit Marines and sailors. No injuries were reported in this morning's blast in Seaside Park. The pipe bomb was in a garbage can when it exploded. Authorities immediately cleared the boardwalk and beach area and the race has been canceled.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia police say a note expressing hatred toward law enforcement was found after a man ambushed a police officer and went on a shooting rampage that left one woman dead and four people wounded. The suspect was shot and killed by police.

LEBANON, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio boy's parents have pleaded guilty to child endangering charges after an officer found the 7-year-old trying to sell a stuffed animal to buy food. Michael and Tammi Bethel, of Franklin, are scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 27. When an officer found the boy in front of a drug store last month, the boy said he hadn't eaten for days, so the officer took him to a restaurant. Four older boys were found at the boy's home, living amid garbage and cat urine.

NEW YORK (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of an architect who fell to his death while working on the roof of a New York City skyscraper. Police say the 52-year-old New Jersey man, Bruno Travalja, died Thursday afternoon after plunging from the roof of the 42-story building in Manhattan. Police say he took off his harness and knelt down to take some measurements when he became dizzy and fell. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (AP) — A stuntman has successfully jumped over the Snake River Canyon in Idaho in an ode to his boyhood idol, Evel Knievel. Eddie Braun soared over the canyon yesterday in a custom-built rocket dubbed "Evel Spirit." The rocket reached an estimated 400 mph before its parachute deployed, allowing Braun and the ship to land safely in fields on the other side of the 1,400 foot-wide canyon.
