SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — An iconic trail at southern Utah's Zion National Park will be closed twice next week for a helicopter-powered waste removal operation.
Officials say the closures at the narrow Angels Landing trail will allow choppers to will remove thousands of pounds of waste a day from two evaporative toilets at a lookout that offers sweeping red-rock views.
Park rangers say the increasing popularity of the park and the hike means the toilets at Scout Lookout are used beyond the capacity they were originally intended for. Officials are asking people to use other facilities instead before starting the hike bordered by sheer drops.
Access to Scout Lookout and Angel's Landing will be closed from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 19 and Sept. 22.
