HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana has re-opened a 26-mile stretch of the Yellowstone River to fishing after officials reported not finding any more dead mountain whitefish there in the last week.
The section re-opened Tuesday runs from the Yellowstone National Park border to the Carbella Fishing Access Site near U.S. Highway 89 in Paradise Valley.
It was part of the 183-mile stretch of the river and its tributaries that was closed on Aug. 19 to prevent the spread of a deadly parasite that has killed thousands of whitefish.
Montana officials allowed rafting and other activities to resume on those 26 miles north of the park last week, but had kept it closed to fishing until Tuesday.
All recreational activity remains closed along a 51-mile stretch from the Carbella access site to the Highway 89 bridge.
