CARRABELLE, Florida (AP) — Forecasters say Hermine is still dangerous though it's been downgraded to a tropical storm. It still has the potential to unleash drenching rain and deadly flooding as it moves across southern Georgia into the Carolinas and up the East Coast. Hermine was the first hurricane to hit Florida in more than a decade when it came ashore this morning.
HILO, Hawaii (AP) — Residents of the Hawaiian Islands are hoping Hurricane Lester follows Madeline and spares them a direct blow. Forecasters say Lester, a major Category 3 storm is on a track to pass just north of the island chain over the weekend, and its center isn't expected to make landfall. But if the storm veers to the south it could have a much greater impact.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — There's global chaos in the shipping industry today following the bankruptcy of the Hanjin shipping line. It's left giant container ships marooned and merchants worrying whether tons of goods will reach their shelves. Experts warn of possible short-term price spikes. So far, 27 ships had been refused entry to ports or terminals, leaving cargo headed to and from Asia in limbo during a high demand time period.
SINGAPORE (AP) — Singapore is ramping up efforts to fight the Zika virus. The city-state is encouraging residents to use insect repellent, clear blockages in drains and wear long-sleeved clothing to protect themselves from mosquitoes after the number of Zika infections rose to 151. Open-air food centers in affected districts had few lunchtime patrons today, many apparently fearful of contracting the mosquito-borne virus.
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A breakaway Taliban faction is claiming responsibility for a pair of militant attacks in northwestern Pakistan today that killed at least 11 people and wounded more than 40. Gunmen wearing suicide vests stormed a Christian colony near the town of Peshawar, killing one civilian, and a suicide bomb attack on a district court in the town of Mardan killed 10 people and wounded 41 others.
