CARRABELLE, Florida (AP) — Hurricane Hermine came calling in northern Florida this morning. The first hurricane to hit the state had 80 mph winds with projected storm surges of up to 12 feet. The storm was expected to drop back down to a tropical storm before pushing into Georgia, the Carolinas and up the East Coast with the potential for heavy rain and deadly flooding. Thousands of power outages are reported.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The unemployment rate is expected to tick down in the latest Labor Department report due today. Economists surveyed by FactSet predict employers added 180,000 jobs in August and that the jobless rate declined to 4.8 percent from 4.9. A positive report could make it more likely the Federal Reserve will raise short-term interest rates, possibly as soon as this month.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The National Retail Federation, the world's largest retail trade association, is asking U.S. officials to work with the South Korean government, ports and others to prevent disruptions following the bankruptcy filing of a shipping giant from South Korea. The bankruptcy of the Hanjin shipping line has spawned global confusion with giant container ships marooned and merchants worrying about their goods.
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) —A pair of militant attacks in northwestern Pakistan today killed at least 11 people and wounded 41. Gunmen wearing suicide vests stormed a Christian colony near the town of Peshawar, killing one civilian, and a suicide bomb attack on a district court in the town of Mardan killed 10 people.
BEIJING (AP) — Chinese anti-monopoly regulators are reviewing the proposed merger of ride-hailing service Uber Technology Ltd.'s Chinese operations with its biggest local competitor. A spokesman says the Ministry of Commerce will look at whether the proposed tie-up with Didi Chuxing protects "fair competition" and consumer rights. Uber and Didi had previously engaged in a bruising battle for riders.
