At least 10 dead in central Italy ... Growing wildfires ... Man charged with killing family friend's young daughter

AMATRICE, Italy (AP) — At least 10 people are reported dead following a strong earthquake in central Italy. The ANSA news agency says at least two bodies were pulled from rubble in the town of Amatrice (ah-mah-TREE'-cheh), where entire palazzos have crumbled to the ground. The mayor in the town of Accumoli (ah-KOO'-moh-lee) says at least six people died there, including a family of four.

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — Windy and dry conditions are helping wildfires grow in California, Washington state and elsewhere. More firefighters have been sent to Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks in Wyoming, where expanding wildfires have closed or threatened key roads and forced the evacuation of a large campground. In California, a wildfire on the central coast has grown to nearly 60 square miles and has destroyed a total of 45 homes in San Luis Obispo and Monterey counties.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Officials in South Korea are condemning the launch of a North Korean ballistic missile. Seoul (sohl) officials say the missile was fired from a submarine Wednesday, and flew about 310 miles, the longest flight by that type of weapon. The launch happened as South Korea and the U.S. conduct their annual military drills.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Topeka man faces sentencing Wednesday for his role in a foiled plan to detonate a bomb at the Fort Riley military post to kill and maim as many U.S. service members as possible. Twenty-nine-year-old Alexander Blair told the judge that he made a big mistake and he blames a genetic disorder for allowing others to take advantage of him. Blair admits lending the accused attacker $100 to pay for storage of the bomb.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A 25-year-old Minnesota man has been charged with kidnapping and sexually assaulting the 5-year-old daughter of a family friend. Authorities say Zachary Todd Anderson abducted Alayna Ertl early Saturday from her home in Watkins, about 70 miles northwest of Minneapolis. The girl's body was found later that day.
