MILWAUKEE (AP) — A woman has identified her 23-year-old son as the man fatally shot by Milwaukee police yesterday. Mildred Haynes told The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that her son, Sylville Smith, was killed in the police shooting that triggered violent protests last night on the city's north side. Police say Smith fled during a traffic stop and was carrying a handgun.
NEW YORK (AP) — New York police are searching for the man who killed a mosque leader and his associate as they were leaving afternoon prayers. The shootings yesterday afternoon in Queens set off fear among the neighborhood's Bangladeshi Muslims. The men were wearing their traditional religious attire when they were shot in the head.
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston police say two children have been found dead under a neighbor's house and that their mother told an acquaintance she drowned them in a bathtub. Houston police say the 30-year-old mother is in custody but not yet charged. They say "all indications" are she acted alone in killing her 7-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Floods in Louisiana are keeping the train they call The City of New Orleans from the southern end of its route between Chicago and New Orleans. An Amtrak spokeswoman says buses have been taking passengers between Jackson, Mississippi, and New Orleans since yesterday.
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Justin Rose of Great Britain has won the first gold medal in men's golf awarded since 1904. Rose birdied the 18th hole for a two-shot victory over British Open champion Henrik Stenson. Matt Kuchar (KOO'-chur) of the United States won the bronze medal.
