NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana's governor says National Guard soldiers and other rescuers in boats and helicopters have plucked more than 1,000 people from their homes and cars as "unprecedented, historic" flooding swamped Louisiana. At least two people have died. The governor is warning that the slow-moving storm will dump even more rain and cause additional problems as it makes its way west.
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (AP) — A lightning strike in New York's Hudson Valley has left one man dead and four other adults injured. It happened yesterday as a storm blew through a park in Poughkeepsie (puh-KIHP'-see). Authorities say two of the injured are in intensive care with burns and internal injuries.
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Officials say the six people who died in a small plane crash in Virginia were from Indiana, Kentucky and Germany and that three of the six were teenagers. State Police say the crashed into trees after aborting its landing at Shannon Airport near Fredericksburg, Virginia. Police identified the victims today.
HATCH, N.M. (AP) — An Ohio fugitive wanted for murder has been arrested in the fatal shooting death of a New Mexico police officer. A sheriff's spokeswoman in New Mexico says Jesse Hanes is suspected of gunning down Officer Jose Chavez during a traffic stop yesterday. Authorities say the suspect then fled on Interstate 25 at speeds up to 100 miles per hour before stopping at a rest stop, stealing a man's car and shooting him. The man's condition isn't known. Hanes and two other men were eventually arrested.
CHICAGO (AP) — Newly released police reports show that Chicago officers involved in the fatal shooting of Paul O'Neal said the18-year-old didn't comply with commands while "reaching into his waistband." One officer said "numerous shots" were heard coming from the vehicle O'Neal was driving, which had been reported stolen. No gun was recovered. The Chicago Police Department released the reports a week after the city released body and dashboard camera footage of the July 28 incident.
