OAKDALE, N.Y. (AP) — A struggling liberal arts college on Long Island has officially filed for closure with state and federal regulators.
Newsday reports (http://nwsdy.li/2b9ZxKk ) Dowling College in Oakdale announced Wednesday that the move comes after its board of trustees voted unanimously last week to close the 48-year-old school.
A spokeswoman for a law firm working with Dowling says the college will cease to be an educational institution on Aug. 31. That's the day when the college is no longer accredited.
Dowling has been winding down operations after months of unsuccessful efforts to save the school through an educational investment firm based in the United Kingdom.
A New York Board of Regents official said previously that Dowling is about $54 million in debt. Its enrollment has dropped 50 percent since 2009 to about 1,700 undergraduates.
