COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The new president of South Carolina State University will be paid a $230,000 salary, with 85 percent of that coming from state taxes.
The State newspaper reports Tuesday (http://bit.ly/2atRo0Y ) the Agency Head Salary Commission approved a $195,000 salary and $25,000 yearly housing allowance for President James Clark. The nonprofit S.C. State University Foundation is adding $35,000 to his salary.
Clark became the 12th president of the state's only public historically black university on July 1.
He had been a board trustee since last year, when the Legislature fired and replaced the previous board because of mounting debt and financial mismanagement.
The salary for Thomas Elzey, the president that board fired last year, exceeded $305,000. State taxes paid less than 60 percent of that. Elzey also received a $25,000 housing allowance.
