INDEPENDENCE, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say a therapy horse died after escaping from her gated enclosure and getting hit by a truck on Highway 22 in Polk County.
Sheriff Mark Garton tells the Statesman Journal (http://stjr.nl/2apNqoT) that an unidentified veterinarian stopped at the scene and euthanized the injured horse.
A second therapy horse also broke free. He suffered deep skin wounds, presumably from hitting the pavement on his knees. The animals were from the Horses Adaptive Riding & Therapy center in Independence.
The driver was not hurt in the Saturday night crash. The truck had to be towed because of damage.
