LOCKHART, Texas (AP) — Federal safety investigators will try to determine why a hot air balloon carrying at least 16 people caught on fire and crashed today in Central Texas. Authorities say there was a "significant loss of life." The crash happened at about 7:40 a.m. in a pasture near Lockhart, about 30 miles south of Austin. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas says he and his wife "lift up in prayer" everyone impacted by the crash.

MUKILTEO, Washington (AP) — Police in suburban Seattle say a 19-year-old man suspected of killing three people and wounding a fourth at a small party early today is behind bars. The man was booked into the Snohomish County Jail today. The jail's roster shows that Allen Christopher Ivanov is being held for investigation of three counts of murder, including one count of aggravated murder. He's not been charged. He's expected to be arraigned Monday.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A San Diego police officer who survived a shooting that killed his partner is awake, but investigators have yet to interview him. The police chief says Wade Irwin is still on track to make a full recovery, two days after the gang unit officer was wounded in a gunbattle. His partner, 16-year veteran Jonathan DeGuzman, was killed. The suspect was critically wounded. Investigators haven't determined whether the shooting was premeditated.

KRAKOW, Poland (AP) — Organizers of a global Catholic celebration say 1.6 million people attended an event with Pope Francis in a huge meadow in a village outside of Krakow, Poland, on Saturday evening. Pope Francis called on the young pilgrims at World Youth Day to not be "couch potatoes" but to take risks as they seek to build a better world. Francis called Jesus the "Lord of risk."

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Federal scientists say a massive die-off is taking place on a coral reef of a national marine sanctuary in the Gulf of Mexico. Researchers report a large-scale mortality event of unknown cause was taking place at the East Flower Garden Bank in Gulf of Mexico, about 100 miles off the coasts of Louisiana and Texas. They say there are unprecedented numbers of dying corals, sponges, sea urchins, brittle stars, clams and other invertebrates.
