PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Democratic convention is over — now America's first female presidential nominee will hit the road to make her case to voters in two Rust Belt states. After a rally at Temple University in Philadelphia, Hillary Clinton and her running mate Tim Kaine will set off on a bus tour of Pennsylvania and Ohio, two key battleground states.
FLINT, Mich. (AP) — Six current or former employees of the state of Michigan are being charged with misconduct and other crimes in connection with the Flint water crisis. Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette (SHOO'-tee) says they "attempted to bury or cover up, downplay or hide information." They join three other public officials who were previously charged after improperly treated water from the Flint River was sent through aging pipes and fixtures, releasing toxic lead.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego's police chief says an officer wounded in a gun battle during a traffic stop is expected to survive, but faces a long recovery. Chief Shelley Zimmerman visited the officer this morning at UC San Diego Medical Center. Another police officer died following the shooting last night. Both officers were part of a gang suppression unit. One suspect was shot and taken into custody and authorities are searching for others who may have been involved. Police have surrounded a house about a half mile from the scene of the shootings and are using a bullhorn to urge a man to leave the house.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A Minnesota prosecutor says he won't step aside for a special prosecutor while he considers charges in the police shooting death of a black motorist. But Ramsey County Attorney John Choi says he will add a special prosecutor to his team to enhance trust in the results of the investigation. He's appointing a former U.S. Justice Department attorney to that role. Philando Castile was killed by a St. Anthony police officer during a traffic stop July 6. Video of the immediate aftermath was streamed live on Facebook by Castile's girlfriend, who says he was reaching for his wallet when he was shot.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Lottery officials say an Indiana couple won the $536 million Mega Millions jackpot drawn on July 8, but they've chosen to remain anonymous. A spokeswoman for the couple says the parents of two children were first-time Mega Millions players, who bought five tickets with computer-generated numbers at a gas station while heading to a youth sporting event. The Hoosier Lottery says the couple will take a $271 million lump sum, after taxes.
