CLEVELAND (AP) — Police estimate a car that crashed and killed three teenage passengers in Cleveland had sped past officers at 80 mph prior to the wreck.

Cleveland.com reports (http://bit.ly/29A3zGW ) the 20-year-old driver told police he thought he was driving about 40 mph in a 25 mph zone while taking five passengers to a party early Saturday.

The driver remained hospitalized this week with collapsed lungs and fractures to his shoulder, neck and back. Police reports say he is suspected of being under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the crash and is expected to be charged when he's released from the hospital.

Police identified the 17-year-old passengers from Euclid killed in the crash as Alexandria Winegarner, Takia Jackson and Daija Wynne. The other passengers were injured.
