HANOVER, N.H. (AP) — More than 4,500 participants walked and cycled through neighborhoods in New Hampshire and Vermont in the rain to raise more than $3 million for cancer research during The Prouty's 35th fundraiser.
Spokesman Rick Blount says Saturday's events were capped by a party at the Richmond Middle School in Hanover, where hungry participants were served thousands of burrito bowls and cookies by 1,200 volunteers.
The Prouty had a far less heralded beginning 35 years ago, when four nurses at the Norris Cotton Cancer Institute paid tribute to a patient who was dying of cancer.
Audrey Prouty lost her nine-year battle with ovarian cancer in August 1982, just days before the four pedaled 100 miles through New Hampshire's White Mountains and raised $4,000 as a tribute to Prouty's courage and indomitable spirit.
