DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — An official in Bangladesh says authorities are still questioning five of 13 people rescued Saturday morning when commandos stormed an upscale restaurant in Dhaka were dozens of people had been either killed or held hostage. The official says authorities are also looking into the backgrounds of those being questioned and are talking to their families and friends. Six attackers were killed and one was captured following the restaurant attack.
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Authorities in Saudi Arabia say only the suicide bomber was killed when he carried out an attack early today near a U.S. diplomatic site in the western city of Jiddah. The Interior Ministry says the attacker detonated his suicide vest when security guards approached him near the parking lot of a hospital, which is near the heavily fortified U.S. Consulate.
CLE ELUM, Wash. (AP) — Aircrews from the California National Guard are helping battle two wildfires in central California from the air. Two Black Hawk helicopters and two Chinook helicopters were deployed Sunday to fight blazes in Kern and Fresno counties. Authorities say over the weekend, cooler temperatures helped firefighters battling a six-square-mile wildfire in Northern California.
NEW YORK (AP) — From franks to fireworks. America celebrates Independence Day today. On New York's Coney Island, the annual Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest takes place. And hundreds of thousands of people are expected to line the banks of Boston's Charles River to watch the fireworks and the Boston Pops Orchestra perform. In Hartford, Connecticut, the fireworks show is canceled because the mayors of Hartford and East Hartford say they couldn't justify the $100,000 expense.
KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — A man and woman are accused of lying about reaching the summit of Mount Everest. The husband and wife from India are accused of altering photos of themselves on the summit of the 29,035-foot mountain, and now Nepal's mountaineering authorities are investigating. Dinesh Rathod and his wife were issued climber's certificates from the Nepal government after they presented a photo of themselves on the summit in May.
