NEW YORK (AP) — The wife of Nobel laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel (EL'-ee vee-ZEHL') says she's grateful for the outpouring of support that has come after his death. Marion Wiesel says her husband was a fighter who waged countless battles for innocent victims. She says he fought for the memory of six million Jews who were killed in the Holocaust and to protect innocent victims without regard for their ethnicity. Wiesel was 87.
BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraqi officials say that 86 (new figure) people have been killed and 160 wounded in a car bombing carried out by the Islamic State group in the center of Baghdad. In an online statement, IS claimed responsibility for the morning attack, which struck a busy shopping district of the capital. The statement could not be independently verified. A second bomb attack in eastern Baghdad killed five people and wounded 16.
DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Many details are still unclear a day after the attack on a restaurant in Bangladesh that killed 28 people, including 20 hostages. Police insist five dead attackers were all Bangladeshis from a banned domestic group even though the Islamic State group claimed responsibility. The government insists there is no IS presence in the country.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — An aged bus retired from carrying students collided with a tractor-trailer in the Florida Panhandle in a fiery crash that killed five people and injured 25. The bus was carrying farm workers from Georgia to Florida.
UNDATED (AP) — Firefighters have gotten a handle on a Southern California wildfire but not before the small but fast-moving brush fire burned five homes and injured three people. The fire broke out Saturday in northern San Bernardino County and quickly spread to about 10 acres. A wildfire burning in steep, inaccessible terrain is threatening at least 300 homes in or near a gated community in central California. Utah and Washington State also have wildfires.
