HOUSTON (AP) — The Baylor College of Medicine will lead a study of patients infected with the Zika virus under a grant from the National Institutes of Health.
In a statement Thursday, the Houston medical school said its Vaccine Treatment and Evaluation Unit will study patients to better understand the infection and immune responses following infection. The study is hoped to lead to diagnostic and infection control measures and a Zika vaccine.
Baylor gets more than $1 million to finance the project. Baylor and the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta will enroll about 200 volunteers for the study and, with the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, perform laboratory research.
Physicians and health departments will refer volunteers age 15 and older to the study with up to a year of follow-up.
