HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — The University of Southern Mississippi marching band is getting major upgrades to its practice facilities, including a new band tower and synthetic turf.
The director of the Pride of Mississippi will soon have a great vantage point to view the band from the new 34-foot, tubular steel tower with two observation decks. The 1,600-square-foot facility also will include space to store instruments and equipment for the Department of Recreational Sports.
Catherine Rand, director of bands, tells The Hattiesburg American (http://hatne.ws/297FyLw) construction of the tower is underway and should be completed by August, weather permitting.
Phase two — which will include installation of the turf — will be bid in the coming months. The work will not begin until after the 2016 football season.
