SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — The Great Lakes Research Consortium has awarded about $45,000 for research on algal blooms, the Great Lakes food web and vitamin B deficiency in Lake Ontario fish.
The Syracuse-based consortium is awarding funds to projects at the College at Brockport, Cornell University, the Upstate Freshwater Institute, and SUNY-ESF.
The College at Brockport study is looking at vitamin B deficiency in lake and steelhead trout and Coho and Chinook salmon as well as their prey fish. The vitamin deficiency kills young fish.
The Upstate Freshwater Institute and State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry are investigating harmful algal blooms in lakes across New York state.
Cornell is studying the food web that supports the sport fishery on Lake Ontario.
