CHICAGO (AP) — There's no word on who was behind the ambush of a Chicago singer who appeared on the Mexican version of "The Voice" in 2011. Friends say 45-year-old Alejandro "Jano" Fuentes was shot three times in the head and critically wounded Thursday outside his school on the city's southwest side. Fuentes was celebrating his birthday there when he got into his car with friends and an armed man suddenly ordered Fuentes to get out and shot him.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — More than 1,200 firefighters are attacking a wildfire in coastal California. The blaze has engulfed nearly 12 square miles of mountain and agricultural lands in Santa Barbara County. Overnight, crews nailed down lines on the fire's west side but the eastern side of the blaze was uncontrolled and virtually inaccessible. "Sundowner" winds gusting to 50 mph are expected to return this evening and that could stir up the fire.
