HACKENSACK, N.J. (AP) — A former special education teacher caught with heroin and other drugs in a high school classroom has been sentenced to probation.
Ryan Fogarty had pleaded guilty to drug possession charges.
The 32-year-old Ridgefield man apologized before being sentenced Friday to four years of probation. Fogarty said he was on a "downward spiral of addiction" at the time.
Prosecutors have said Fogarty had a backpack containing pills, drug paraphernalia and 125 bags of heroin in his Cliffside Park high school classroom in March 2014. Authorities had launched an investigation after a student reported the finding of a syringe on the floor of a school bathroom.
Fogarty said his client sought treatment and "has been clean" since his arrest.
