(AP) — A law enforcement official says the man who carried out the shooting rampage a gay nightclub in Florida was known to the FBI before the incident and had been looked at by agents within the last few years. The official says the matter for which Omar Mateen came under investigation was "open and closed pretty quickly." The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Hundreds of people in Orlando, Florida, have lined up to give blood to help the victims of the massacre at a gay nightclub. Officials at OneBlood say they have received such an overwhelming response that they are now asking donors to come back over the next several days. Fifty people are dead and more than 50 others injured, many of them critically, in the overnight attack.
VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis is expressing the "deepest feelings of horror and condemnation" over a massacre at a Florida nightclub that killed at least 50 people. A Vatican spokesman says the pontiff denounces "homicidal folly and senseless hatred." He says Francis joins the families of victims and injured in "prayer and compassion."
BEIRUT (AP) — A powerful explosion has rocked the Lebanese capital, and ambulances are rushing to the scene. The explosion in an upscale district of Beirut destroyed several cars and caused severe damage to one of Lebanon's biggest banks. It occurred as residents sat down for iftar, the meal that breaks the daylong fast for observing Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan.
PARIS (AP) — The French government is asking for restrictions to be imposed on the sale and consumption of alcohol in European Championship host cities after three days of drunken violence in Marseille (mahr-SAY'). The Interior Ministry says local officials will be allowed to decide which areas would be subject to the restrictions. Bans on alcohol could apply to public spaces, bars around stadiums and stores that sell alcohol for consumption off the premises.
