SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Two buildings at a state prison facility in Draper are shuttering amid a shortage in correctional officers and a drop in inmates.
KUTV of Salt Lake City reports (http://bit.ly/1U1G6yb) that Utah Department of Corrections announced Friday that some inmates will be relocated during the next few months because of the closure.
According to the department, they will be moved from the Lone Peak housing facility and the Timpanogos Women's Correctional Facility.
The affected inmates will go to other areas of the prison or to county jails.
In a statement, the department says the closure will cut mandatory staff overtime in half.
Corrections officials say there are 142 officer vacancies.
The Utah Legislature voted last year to close the Draper prison and build a new one in Salt Lake City.
