CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago agency that investigates police misconduct has released more than 300 video clips from 101 incidents it has investigated, along with recordings of 9-1-1 calls and original police reports. The Independent Police Review Authority calls it "an important first step" toward rebuilding trust in police. But the head of the police union says the material released today doesn't tell the whole story. All the cases involve shootings by officers, use of stun guns resulting in great bodily injury or death, and in-custody incidents where there was great bodily injury or death.
DETROIT (AP) — Police in Detroit say a fourth person has been taken into custody following the abduction and death of a 13-year-old boy. No charges have been filed against the man arrested today or the three others. Detroit's police chief says police are awaiting the results of an autopsy on the body of Deontae Mitchell, who was found dead yesterday in a vacant lot. The boy disappeared Tuesday night while riding bikes with a cousin.
FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — A third Texas prison is being evacuated because of flooding. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice has begun moving about 1,700 inmates from a prison about 30 miles south of Houston to other prisons that have room. Meanwhile, a search continues for four soldiers swept away when a truck carrying 12 troops overturned in high water at Fort Hood. Five other soldiers were killed and three were rescued.
PARIS (AP) — Scientists say extreme rainfall has increased worldwide and especially in Europe because of man-made climate change. Five different scientists told The Associated Press today that increased downpours are one of the clearest signals of global warming. Worldwide record rainfall has increased 12 percent from 1980 to 2010, compared to the previous 80 years, according to a 2015 Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research study published in the journal Climatic Change. In Europe, the increase was 31 percent.
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — A Syrian refugee who last year was forced to swim for her life trying to reach Greece will be competing at the Olympics. Eighteen-year-old Yusra Mardini is one of 10 athletes chosen by the International Olympic Committee today to form a refugee team at the Rio games. The team consists of five athletes from South Sudan, two from Syria, two from Congo and one from Ethiopia. They'll compete under the Olympic flag and march together in the opening ceremony on Aug. 5.
