NORTHPORT, Mich. (AP) — A northern Michigan high school student is working on a $25,000 senior project to install solar panels for his school.
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports (http://bit.ly/1sIuKrK ) Caleb Brown's plans call for panels near Northport Public School. They'll capture energy to provide about 3 percent of the district's $40,000 annual electricity bill and serve as a learning tool for students.
Brown recognizes the reduction is relatively small, but notes: "With projects like this, any size project that you do is helping the environment."
The Leelanau Township Community Foundation recently approved more than $12,000 for Brown's project, tipping him more than $3,000 over initial cost estimates. Northport Public Schools' Board of Education earlier approved $16,000 for the project.
Brown is working to get needed permits for the final leg of the project.
